Dress and Grooming (All Grade Levels)

The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, and minimizes safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

1. Shorts, skirts, dress’ and outer garments must be no shorter than the student’s middle knuckle when the student’s arms are relaxed at the student’s sides and must completely cover the buttock area. Shorts must have a hem- no cut-off shorts are allowed.

2. Pants, skirts and shorts must fit properly at the waist. Exposure of undergarments is unacceptable.

3. Any clothing that exposes the waist, navel, abdomen, midsection, torso, back, chest, or other areas considered private are strictly prohibited. That includes, but is not limited to crop tops, midriff tops, low cut tops, or shirts cut off at the side, halter tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, tank tops (straps less than 1 inch in width) or tops that expose undergarments are not allowed.

4. No low cut or revealing clothing. (Necklines shall not expose cleavage in the front of be below the armpits in the back.)

5. See-through clothing as a primary garment is not appropriate.

6. Pajama tops and/or bottoms, boxers, or other sleepwear as outerwear are prohibited.

7. No costume clothing or costume eye contacts

8. No face paint.

9. Clothing with writing or screening referring to, or that suggests, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, obscenity, profanity, satanic, cult, death, poison, violence, gang affiliation, racism, or that suggests offensive or potentially disruptive content is unacceptable.

10. Clothing must fit properly. Clothing with holes, cuts, rips, or tears exposing undergarments or skin must be no higher than the length of the student’s middle knuckle when the student’s arms are relaxed at the student’s side. Tape and other materials will NOT be used to correct this problem other than a permanent patch.

11. Excessively tight or oversized garments are not allowed.

12. Shirts with low cut armholes or cutout sleeves; such male muscle/sleeveless shirts are prohibited.

13. Visible body piercing (other than the ears and a small nose stud piercing) and related jewelry is prohibited. Prohibited areas of the body include but are not limited to eyebrow, cheek, tongue and lips. Band-Aids to cover piercings and spacers are not allowed.

14. Any visible tattoo objectionable or disruptive as well as be able to meet the following standards:

No symbols, mottos or words (including acronyms) that convey crude, vulgar, violent, gang related, sexually explicit (or suggestive messages).

No symbols, mottos or words (including acronyms) advertising tobacco, alcohol, or drugs (including paraphernalia)

15. Sunglasses, caps, hats, bandanas, hoods, and other headwear (with the exception of for medical reasons) are not to be worn in the building. Students may not wear hair curlers, rollers, hair picks, combs, or brushes in their hair.

16. Male students must be clean-shaven.

17. Hair that is not a natural color (black, brown, red, blonde) or a color or style that may be unusually distracting is not allowed. Colored streaks are allowed in the hair as long as the colored area is not more than 10% of the hair color.

18. Hair must be clean, neat and well groomed. Hair must not interfere with vision or cover a student’s eyes. Side burns must be trimmed and not below the bottom of the ear.

19. Shoes must be worn at all times. Footwear of any kind that may cause disruption or pose a health/safety hazard are not permitted such as but not limited to taps, metal plates, cleats or wheels on shoes. Tennis shoes must be worn for physical education class.

20. Any disruptive or distracting mode of clothing or appearance that adversely impacts the educational process is not acceptable.

21. Garments must allow for participation in all regular school activities while maintaining dignity and modesty.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes loss of instructional time.

Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
